Self-attestation is a form of clarification to verify own documents are correct or genuine. It can be requested by the government or any other legal entity to the authorized person to submit. People need to photocopy their original certificates and do a signature on them to make them authentic. It is time and money saving in the process of finding the appropriate authorities who can certify one’s documents.
In recent times, self-attest documents have been more common, particularly in the Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) program. Self-attestation gives you permission to vouch for the authenticity of the documents without any legal higher authorities.

Since original certificates cannot be approved, people need to submit photocopies and get attested by the gazetted officer or any notary officer in the case of need. These officers are licensed to proclaim the legitimacy of the photocopy of a document after verifying the originals. This attestation method can confirm the document photocopy is genuine with an authorized signature for legal or similar service.
What is Self Attested Copy?
Self Attested Copy means the photocopy of the original documents that are self-signed. Here, the applicant may have to copy more than just one document and make each of them signed by any gazetted officer. However, people may find it hectic to make time to find the authorized officer for the signature, and that’s where the self-attestation is sufficient to ratify a document.
Self-attested copy of every document claims that the provided information is accurate and appropriate and that signatory will hold the responsibility if any error is found. In this case, the signatory and the document owner have to write “Self-Attested” above the validated signature to take responsibility for the originality of the documents.
Government-Approved Self-Attestation
The Government of India decided to approve the self-attestation justifiable for government-related applications. The second administrative improved the commission in its 12th report titled “Citizen Centric Administration- The Heart of Governance” has proposed accepting self-certification provisions to make it easy.
Here, only the legal matter will need for the self-certification, though the Government of India abolished the necessity of witnessing some of the legal documents by the notary itself in July 2014. Nevertheless, self-attestation is not welcomed so far in many documents in order to the Indian government works. The self-attestation works so well to make the assignment easier.

The state chief secretaries received an office memorandum sent by the department that says, “Obtaining the attested copy or affidavit not only involves money but also triggers time waste. These will help save the common people’s time in finding an authoritative person to get the document attested as well as money.”
